Domestic violence related offences and domestic violence orders have come to the forefront of the public view in recent times due to some extremely violent and concerning actions. As a result, we are seeing an increase in such matters coming before the courts and much harsher outcomes being imposed on offenders. The Qld Government has also made recent amendments to laws about DVOs and domestic violence offences relating to obtaining bail after being charged with relevant offences including to ‘show cause’ as to why they should be granted bail, making it more difficult for an alleged offender to remain out of jail while their matters are progressing through the court system.
The courts also are increasing the punishment, including lengthy terms of imprisonment for offenders who are guilty of such offences. If you have been charged with a domestic violence offence and required to appear in the Magistrates’ Court including needing representation for a bail application, you should call us without delay. We are available 24/7 to provide urgent legal advice and representation.
